ON THE HORRIZON: 'ATROCIOUS'
Spain enters cinéma-vérité horror realm with strong contender

The Quintanilla family was found dead. Recorded evidence was discovered by the police. Production company acquires the confidential material and edits it into a horror movie.

Salient Media just released the official trailer for Fernando Barreda Luna's Spanish-language horror/thriller ATROCIOUS, the latest entry into the now-here-to-stay subgenre of "found documentary footage" horror films to hit the big screen in recent years. Previous such films to have left their phosphor-green night-vision mark at the boxoffice include The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.

Atrocious excerpts found footage from a film reel recovered by Spanish police, documenting a family of five discovering the truth behind a dangerous urban legend who are found viciously murdered in their summer farm house in Sitges (Spain) on April 4th of 2010. The 37-hours of footage shows Cristian (18) and July Quintanilla (15) during the final 5-days of their lives as they investigate the local myth of a young girl named Melinda who was lost in the woods near the house in 1940, and whose ghost has subsequently appeared to lost travelers in the region. As you might imagine, things intensify and ultimately culminate in unspeakable atrocities.

The trailer for Fernando Barreda Luna's ATROCIOUS.

The early word in the horror universe is that the film is a good contender with sources pointing out that the suspense factor is rather strong and well-executed, most siting screenwriter, editor, producer, and director Fernando Barreda as the prime reason the cinéma-vérité device works here - high praise given that Atrocious represents his first foray into feature films (must be that Spanish sangre). Luna is the founder of Nabu Films, a Spain-based production company.

Atrocious premiered internationally at the 43rd Sitges International Film Festival in 2010 and then at Slamdance this past January 2011. The film is part of the Bloody Disgusting Selects series.
