ON THE HORRIZON: 'ROSA'
Jesus Orellana's mixed-genre film is an impactful work of art

In the near future, humanity has disappeared, leaving behind a large megalopolis devoid of natural life. From the destruction awakes ROSA, a robot part of the KERNEL project, mankind's last attempt to restore the earth's ecosystem using recovered samples of long-extinct plant species. Wandering among the ruins of the lifeless city, Rosa will soon discover that she is not the only part of Kernel that has awakened.

Spanish filmmaker Jesus Orellana released a 40-second teaser of his hybrid horror/sci-fi/fantasy/thriller ROSA back in February. Unfortunately, it didn't come across our desk then. Subsequently, the full trailer was dropped a few weeks ago, and thanks to Rachel Belofsky from Screamfest, LA, we were recently connected with the talented and resourceful filmmaker. But short or long it doesn't matter. If we'd only seen 24 frames from the project - the film would still be a stunning work of fanboy art and an impressive piece of computer animation. It's even more impressive when one considers the director's claim that the film was executed on zero budget! The film will be openly distributed for free starting in November. We're delighted it's finally on our radar - and now YOURS.

The trailer for ROSA.

Look out for our full interview with Jesus Orellana as part of our coverage of the Latino/a filmmakers showcasing their horrorwears at Screamfest 2011, as well as more details on the film's forthcoming gratis release.
