to Severin Films CEO David Gregory
when he was editing a DVD featurette
for the 1987 ARIA
that included ten short pieces
directed by such acclaimed directors
as Jean
Luc Godard, Robert
Altman, Nicolas
Roeg, Ken
Russell, among others. “I
felt that the notion of giving
filmmakers a general concept, the same
budget and complete creative control
would lend itself perfectly to a
modern horror film. In my opinion,
there is no other genre where
unleashing the unrestrained creative
ideas of filmmakers could redeem such
an outlandish array of stories and
images.” The common denominator among
the six stories is the theme of Grand
Guignol theatre.

THE HORRIZON: 'THE THEATRE BIZARRE'
Horror
anthology brings together the genre's
twisted brain matter

Down a
seedy city street in her
neighborhood, young Enola Penny is
obsessed with what appears to be a
long-abandoned and decrepit theatre. One
night, she decides to sneak inside.
But in the dark auditorium a show
unlike any other unfolds before her
eyes. Its host is an eerie human
puppet named Peg Poett who will
introduce Penny to six tales of the
bizarre.

Severin
Films' THE
THEATRE BIZARRE is an anthology
of six horror films guaranteed to
satisfy the macabre appetite of most
any horrorphile. The Canadian export
recently premiered at Montreal's Fantasia
International Film Festival and
also showcased at the UK's FrightFest
as its opening night's film. As
the name implies, the film is a
twisted and voyeuristic look at the
demented minds of some of the genre's
most talented creatives. According to
Severin, the filmmakers "were granted
total creative freedom." And we think
the trailer bears this out. The film
runs 108 mins.
The magnificently horrific six are: Tom Savini, Douglas
Buck, Buddy
Giovinazzo, David
Gregory, Karim
Hussain, Jeremy
Kasten, and Richard
Stanley. The film's tale tour
guide is a human automaton played by
German horror veteran Udo
Kier (pictured above).
The six segments are:.
"Vision
Stains" - Karim Hussain (Dir.)
"The
Mother Of Toads" - Richard Stanley
(Dir.)
"Sweets"
- David Gregory (Dir.)
"The
Accident" - Douglas Buck (Dir.)
"I
Love You" - Buddy Giovinazzo (Dir.)
Severin Films also has several HD
restorations in the works, including Richard Rush’s The
Stunt Man, Ted
Post’s The
Baby, Eugenio
Martín’s Horror
Express, and Peter
Duffell’s The
House That Dripped Blood.)
